XINGHE SCHOOL, LONGGANG

Xinghe School answers a dense, complex site with the layout of a weilong, the walled communal house of southern China. Teaching wings enclose courtyards at a comfortable scale, set by a careful ratio of height to width, so that the campus reads as one large classroom. Lively color and flowing curves thread through it, weaving a free and many-layered vertical school. The dense massing is carved open and wrapped in a systematic layer of external shading, letting light and wind pass through in answer to Shenzhen's climate.
