CYCLING STATION

2021
Landscape / Pavilion
Built for the 2021 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, the pavilion takes cycling as its theme. It serves the fifteen-minute neighborhood as a place for riders to rest and pause. A light, prefabricated timber structure of bamboo-steel (a high-strength natural bamboo composite) and Ferrari membrane made low-carbon, rapid construction possible: the whole pavilion was assembled in sixty hours. Its form follows the turning geometry of a bicycle wheel, timber spokes rotating and shifting into a continuous curved surface. The members interlock by stacked compression, doing away with diagonal bracing while carrying load and enclosing space at once. Bicycles park either slotted through or hung, suiting both competitive events and everyday use. Deep sheltering eaves, paired with membranes of varying translucency, draw in soft light and shadow, making an artful public node that invites people to gather and talk. Alongside the pavilion, for the same Lingang art season the studio designed a family of street furniture scattered across the lakeside greens: the tensile-mesh Star Raft canopy bench, a boat-shaped landscape seat and more, touching the site with the least possible material and structure, several of them granted national utility patents.
